Many international travelers and students have employer group medical/health insurance that can offer coverage while traveling in another country but very few consider repatriation travel insurance to cover the costs of the mortal remains being transported back to the home country in the event of a death. International Students & Cultural Exchange program visitors who are covered under the University’s employee group health insurance plan are required to supplement their medical coverage with travel repatriation insurance.
Repatriation travel insurance is designed to primarily cover for the costs for transporting the mortal remains back to the home country. These plans provide coverage for evacuation to the nearest qualified medical facility in the event of a sickness or illness but typically exclude coverage for expenses resulting from treating a sickness or injury.
Typical plan benefits can include coverage for:
- Travel Evacuation: the cost for transporting the sick or the injured to a hospital; it can include costs for air ambulance
- Repatriation: when a person dies overseas then the plan can pay for the cost of preparing the bodily remains and transporting it back to the home country
- Accidental Death & Dismemberment: certain fixed payment amounts when the insured dies in an accident or loses a limb or limbs
- Emergency Re-union: travel and lodging expenses of a loved one during a medical evacuation
- Political Evacuation: transportation to the nearest place of safety or insured’s home country when the US Department of State issues a travel warning
